St. John’s Catholic Prep (SJCP) is making its second appearance in the Gonzaga DC Classic. The Vikings play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) where they finished fifth last season. Team members collected a number of honors, including All-MIAA and All- Frederick County selections.
Led by third year Head Coach Devin Williams, the Vikings look to continue rebuilding their culture and establishing a name in the DMV area. SJCP has a roster filled with gritty under-the- radar talent that includes senior transfers Xavier Grainger and Tim Avrine. The squad is led by senior guard Ayden Hurley, currently being recruited by several NCAA Division III schools. Other notable players include junior Tristan Thompson, freshman Mamadou Sako, and sophomores Blaine Kalaw and Aaron Shoffner.
“This season is a great opportunity for our team and community collectively,” says Coach Williams. “We are truly grateful and excited to participate in the Gonzaga DC Classic, a kickoff to the season which always meant so much to me during my time down on Eye Street. Being able to bring my program to such a storied event will be a great opportunity for not only my student-athletes but our community also. I look forward to the buzz of the lights at Carmody Center and sitting on the visitors’ side of the gym.”
Saint John’s Catholic Preparatory School, located in Buckeystown, MD, is the oldest Catholic high school in the state of Maryland. Saint John’s Catholic Prep prepares students to be leaders with good hearts and discerning spirits as they pursue truth, academic excellence, and service to humanity.
In the classroom, students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and be curious by engaging in a rigorous college preparatory educational program. Our faculty challenges students to reach their greatest potential by fostering the exchange of ideas, recognizing and respecting views of others, nurturing individual faith journeys, and promoting community stewardship.
Small class sizes, experienced teachers, and daily academic support allows our students to understand complex concepts, build successful academic skills, apply deeper meaning to subjects, and advocate for their own learning, giving them the knowledge and skills to be successful wherever their academic journey takes them next.
At Saint John’s Catholic Prep 70 percent of our students are student athletes who participate in varsity and junior varsity sports. Our SJCP Vikings learn skills and strategy, but, more importantly, they are exposed to the ideals of teamwork, leadership, sacrifice, and the devotion to excellence through our coaches and challenge of interscholastic competition. Our girls teams play in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) and our boys teams in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
