t's a new era for the Riverdale Baptist School Crusaders under the leadership of Bruce Shingler, newly appointed as head coach before the start of the 2023-24 season. Prior to taking the lead role at Riverdale Baptist, Coach Shingler served in college basketball coaching roles at Maryland, South Carolina, and Towson after a playing career at St. Augustine's College.
The Crusaders started the 2023-24 season on a high note with two strong wins at the 15th Annual Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Dallas. They averaged 77 points per game and played tough defense with tenacious rebounding.
Riverdale Baptist projects to be a defensive-minded team this year that will guard with speed and aggressiveness. On offense, look for the Crusaders to space the floor and feature strong perimeter shooting.
The Crusaders are coming off a strong 2022-23 season in which they finished 27-4, went undefeated in Metro Independent School Athletic League conference play, and won their conference tournament. The team returns several players from that successful season and several transfers as well. The Crusaders expect to be strongly competitive and to contend for another conference championship.
Seniors Nathaniel Wooden and Jackson Furman and junior Ashley Sims will provide veteran leadership as returning players who logged significant minutes for the Crusaders last year. All are college recruits who bring athleticism and sharp shooting to their games. Senior Xavier Pickett and juniors Giovanni Sanford, Dominic Carr, and Zion Foy join Riverdale Baptist as transfer students capable of boosting the Crusaders with skill and veteran presence. As a key performer on Eleanor Roosevelt’s 2022 Maryland state championship team, Gio Sanford is expected to be major contributor for the Crusaders.
