Archbishop Ryan, one of the top teams in the highly competitive Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) looks to build on last year’s 18-9 season with even more success in 2023-24. Ninth year head coach Joe Zeglinski has four returning starters, led by 6-9 senior center Thomas Sorber (Georgetown University commit) and 6-3 senior guard Darren Williams (Florida Gulf Coast University commit). Joining these three-year starters are 6-6 senior forward Jaden Murray, 6-foot senior guard Ryan Everett and 6-1 senior guard Rocco Morabito (Gannon University commit). The Raiders have plenty of depth as well, with 6-4 junior guard Brandon Russell, 6-3 senior wing Christian Durham, 6-foot senior guard Gavin Reed and 5- 11 sophomore guard Matt Johnson as part of the rotation. Coach Zeglinski has a veteran, focused squad that expects to compete for a PCL, city and state championship this year. In addition to the Gonzaga DC Classic, the Raiders nonconference schedule includes the City of Palms Tournament in Fort Myers, Florida from December 19-23 and a home contest against Rutgers Prep on December 28.
Archbishop Ryan High School, with a student population of over 865, is one of the largest high schools in the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Named after Patrick John Ryan, the second Archbishop of Philadelphia, the school opened its doors in the fall of 1966. Located on Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia, Archbishop Ryan housed two distinct schools – one for girls, and the other for boys, before merging in 1989.
Archbishop Ryan strives to teach as Jesus did by providing spiritual, social and service opportunities for growth. The school has prepared generations of students to be successful in their post high school endeavors, challenged by the faculty to become the leaders of tomorrow through a comprehensive academic curriculum rooted in excellence. Extensive educational programs, adapted to the needs of the modern workplace, are offered.
Students benefit from classroom instruction and a library/media center that together incorporate state of the art wireless technology. All students must take four credits each in theology and English language arts, and three credits each in social studies, mathematics and science. Curriculum highlights include opportunities to participate in programs at the accelerated/honors level, fourteen advanced placement course offerings, and to compete to be a diocesan scholar, among others. Students selected to be diocesan scholars are provided the opportunity to take four courses for credit at a nearby Catholic college during senior year.
With a wide variety of extracurricular activities offered, approximately 90% of the student body participates in clubs, sports and service activities. The music department offers a variety of performance activities, as well as two musical theater productions each year. Archbishop Ryan has always been a Catholic institution, as reflected by our religious education curriculum, special religious events, in-house and overnight retreats, and daily witness to our Catholic faith.
The school’s distinctive red and gold seal, containing the Archbishop Ryan motto, “In Vite Mane” is visible throughout the school. Its meaning, “Remain on the Vine,” is not an empty phrase. Students and alumni continue to be a part of the Ryan family, and always proudly proclaim "WE ARE AR!”
