St. John’s Catholic Prep (SJCP) from Buckeystown, Maryland returns to the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament for the first time since 2006. The Vikings play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Led by first-year Head Coach Devin Williams, the Vikings are looking to rebuild their culture and establish a name in the DMV. The Vikings have a roster filled with gritty, under the radar talent that includes senior transfer Macahi Nelson. SJCP is led by senior guard Dezmyn Nicholson, who is currently being recruited by several Division 2 schools. Other notable players this season include juniors Jaden Codlin and David Giandrea. “This season is a great opportunity for our team and players collectively. We are truly grateful and excited to participate in the Gonzaga DC Classic tournament,” said Coach Williams. “The DC Classic has always meant so much to me during my time on Eye Street, and the tournament served as a kickoff to the season. Being able to bring my program to such a storied event will be a great opportunity for not only my student-athletes but our community also. I look forward to the buzz of the lights at Carmody Center and sitting on the visitor’s side of the gym.” You can follow the Vikings Varsity Boys Basketball team on Twitter or Instagram at: Twitter: @BoysSJCP, Instagram: SJCPBoysHoops
Saint John's Catholic Prep is a private Roman Catholic coeducational school located in Buckeystown, Maryland. St. John’s was the first independent Roman Catholic school in the state of Maryland and was also the first Roman Catholic secondary school in the state of Maryland. At this time the school was colloquially renamed "St. John's at Prospect Hall," a name which was used almost as often as its traditional name, St. John's Literary Institution. In 1972, under the pressure and possibility of closure, a group of parents, alumni, faculty and parishioners pooled their energies and resources to recharter St. John's as the first independent Roman Catholic School in Maryland with a Board of Trustees. During the early 21st century, the school's Physical Education Department and interscholastic athletics programs became known statewide for their athletic success, especially in basketball, winning several state titles and scoring high on the local newspapers' lists of top high school teams. By 2005, having outgrown the facilities at Prospect Hall, St. John's acquired 46 acres of land in nearby Buckeystown, Maryland adjacent to the property of St. Thomas More Academy. Embarking upon its new goal of moving from the historic "Prospect Hall" mansion property, the school began a "re-branding" campaign and changed its title to "Saint John's Catholic Prep.” The college preparatory curriculum at Saint John’s Catholic Prep consists of the core subjects - Mathematics, Science, English, Social Studies, World Languages, and Theology. Physical Education, Technology, and Fine Arts are also required. Students may select electives in major subject areas in addition to required courses. The boys' sports participate in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), while the girls' sports participate in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM). Students compete in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, track and field, lacrosse, baseball, and cheerleading. The Vikings learn skills and strategy, but, more importantly, they are exposed to the ideals of teamwork, sacrifice and the devotion to excellence through our coaches and challenge of interscholastic competition.
