Team Profile

Whitney Young High School was the state’s 4A Champion in 2017, is ranked number 1 out of all the Illinois high school teams in the 2018­-2019 preseason rankings. Notable alumni include top player in the country, Jahlil Okafor, #3 in the NBA draft now playing for the New Orleans Pelicans. Brimming with young talent, coach Tyrone Slaughter has an outstanding foundation of youth that is ready to shine and surprise, starting with 6’1 junior Tyler Beard, one of the top guards in the state. 6’1 junior shooter Elliott Sieger , and 6’2 senior Myles Baker will step up now with bigger opportunities. Other contributors include: Keenan Jones, a 6’4 wing; Justin Warren, a 6’0 senior; and 6’6 junior Sangolay Njie. A transfer from Fenwick includes DJ Steward, a 6’3 guard.

School Profile

Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (Whitney Young) is a public 4–year magnet high school located in the Near West Side neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. It is operated by the Chicago Public Schools district and has some 2,100 students. Whitney Young opened in September, 1975 as the city's first public magnet high school. The school, named after Whitney Moore Young Jr., a prominent civil rights leader, consistently rates among the top high schools in the state of Illinois. Admission is based on entrance exam performance, standardized test scores, and elementary school grades, and is open to all residents of Chicago.

The school’s mission is to provide a college preparatory academic program that challenges all students to reach their maximum intellectual, social, and technological potential by creating an environment of excellence, responsibility, and diversity through professional development, structured learning experiences and parental support.

The school also has an extensive program of extracurricular activities, including media and theater; math, chess, and debate teams which compete state-wide and nationally, and groups which engage in an array of other academic subjects.

Whitney Young has 52 athletic teams of 12 different sports. The boys' basketball team has won the Illinois High School Association state championships in 1998, 2009, 2014, and 2018. The girls' basketball team won the state championship in 2008, 2012, and 2014.
